This Little Girl
To women around the world, who have inspired and continue to inspire those around them.
March 8th 1971, a beautiful little baby girl was born; her big black eyes shone like shiny marbles and her curly hair topped her adorable face. She was the colour of chocolate and her persona just as sweet. When the nurse placed her in her mother’s arms, she stared deep into her eyes; at that very moment her mom knew that her daughter was going to go on to achieve great things, This little girl was her father’s pride and her mother’s joy, she was literally born with a silver spoon in her mouth.
This little girl grew up to be athletic, the kind of kid that got picked first on every team; she was incredibly smart, funny and a smile that could capture anyone’s attention. Her lovely features and graceful body , had old Indian women hoping to get their sons married to her. For all the wonderful attributes that she possessed, there was one thing that deeply disturbed her- colour. Growing up in a typical Indian society where females with fairer skin were considered superior to their darker counterparts, this little girl always felt like she was lacking. For a person who could run like a gazelle and capture the world with her smile, the fact that her complexion was just chocolate and not white chocolate, held her back psychologically many a time. Then again, there were times she would put these thoughts aside and be the superstar she was meant to be.
Time passed and this little girl grew up; like everyone else she fell in love. She had many viable young men behind her and yet she chose the most mysterious and the most different one; No one knew why she chose him or what she saw in him, in fact even she didn’t know. From the beginning, one could tell that this relationship wasn’t going to have a fairytale ending; the person she had chosen was just too ‘volatile’ to settle down and have a family. Her passion and her adamant nature though, eventually led to a marriage and two kids. As the days passed by things went from bad to worse; it was the kind of marriage that parents pray won’t happen to their children. Every day was torture and the family home resembled a living hell; her gorgeous eyes were filled with tears and her mind filled with fear.
The years rolled by and she lost her identity, piece by piece. Her two children were her greatest treasure and their laughter and achievements, her lifeline. In all her sufferings though, she never forgot to be a blessing to those around hers; she was the best friend one could have and her heart the kindest. Her million dollar smile, although a bit faded by then, still instilled hope and joy to those around her. Over time she learnt to convert every sorrow in her life into an opportunity to help someone else whose life was more miserable.
Then one day this little girl crumbled; she had had enough and she decided it was time for her to find herself again. With a prayer on her lip, a few rupees in her pocket and her two children on either side, she stepped into the unknown- stepped into freedom.
January 27th 2014, this little girl wakes up, her face sticky with previous nights tears. For a moment her heart is heavy and then she sees herself in the mirror; her lovely locks have a bit of grey in them now but her eyes are bright like when she was a child. She looks around and realizes that there is no sadness only laughter, no luxury but contentment, and no sadness only joy. This little girl then leaves her room with a little prayer on her lips and kisses her little ones a very good morning. The morning perhaps brought a new battle along with it, but this little girl knows she’ll survive- She’s a warrior.
